When cold, the rails were lifted by a 7 ton crane using a lifting beam and L-hooks and transferred by roller deck to the roller straightening machine. The machine had seven overhung rollers. As the rails passed through the rolls it would bend very slightly up and down as the offset rolls ironed out internal stresses built up during cooling.
